    An evaluation of factors affecting students' use of a web-based engineering resource

    The purpose of this work was to investigate the relationship between a number of influential factors, including cognitive style and approach to learning, and students’ processing behaviour during their use of a particular Web-based resource for Electronics and Electrical Engineering undergraduates. This was achieved through the development of a learner profile for each student using Riding’s (1991) Revised Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F). The quantitative component of the research was then set against a detailed analysis of students’ processing behaviour using verbal protocol data gathered through individual think-aloud sessions and post-intervention interviews. The results of the quantitative component of the research provided no compelling evidence to suggest that cognitive style was a factor that influenced student performance while using the resource or their perceptions of the package. There was however, some evidence to suggest that the package was more positively received by students who profiled as deep learners than their surface counterparts. The analysis of students’ processing behaviour from their verbal protocols highlighted a number of the resource’s shortcomings, which typically promoted a surface, goal-oriented approach to its content. It also identified problems with the design and structure of the resource, which at times had a deleterious effect on learning. The results also raised questions regarding the efficacy and use of psychometric inventories in this kind of research

    Technological studies, physics and university entrance to engineering courses

    This paper investigates the reasons why, in Scotland, Higher Technological Studies is failing to emerge as a credible entrance qualification to engineering courses within higher education, when compared with the success of the more traditional subject, Higher Physics. The paper examines the wider issues on the position of Technological Studies within the educational establishment. Recent figures for the Engineering Faculty at a Scottish university show that since 1993, 86% of entrants to the faculty have Higher Physics as an entrance qualification as against 14% with Higher Technological Studies. The subsequent progress of these students is then analysed with respect to their entrance qualifications. It then explores school pupil and parent perceptions of, and attitudes towards subject choice, in order to develop an understanding of pupils' choice of subjects at secondary school level and their career aspirations.     High Temperature Superconductor Lead Assemblies for XRISM

    The RESOLVE instrument on the upcoming XRISM mission is a rebuild of the SXS instrument that successfully demonstrated high resolution X-ray spectroscopy on the Hitomi mission using a microcalorimeter array at 50 mK. As with SXS, the RESOLVE instrument requires High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) lead assemblies to carry high current to the Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator (ADR) while meeting a very stringent heat conductance budget. For the RESOLVE HTS lead assemblies, we have used new materials and processes to improve the stability and consistency of solder joints to the HTS material. We have also designed a new thermal strap that eliminates stress concentrations on the HTS tapes. We present the results of testing on the engineering model and flight model units, as well as the results of long term testing on prototype solder joints

    Trends in detectable viral load by calendar year in the Australian HIV observational database

    Background Recent papers have suggested that expanded combination antiretroviral treatment (cART) through lower viral load may be a strategy to reduce HIV transmission at a population level. We assessed calendar trends in detectable viral load in patients recruited to the Australian HIV Observational Database who were receiving cART. Methods Patients were included in analyses if they had started cART (defined as three or more antiretrovirals) and had at least one viral load assessment after 1 January 1997. We analyzed detectable viral load (>400 copies/ml) in the first and second six months of each calendar year while receiving cART. Repeated measures logistic regression methods were used to account for within and between patient variability. Rates of detectable viral load were predicted allowing for patients lost to follow up. Results Analyses were based on 2439 patients and 31,339 viral load assessments between 1 January 1997 and 31 March 2009. Observed detectable viral load in patients receiving cART declined to 5.3% in the first half of 2009. Predicted detectable viral load based on multivariate models, allowing for patient loss to follow up, also declined over time, but at higher levels, to 13.8% in 2009. Conclusions Predicted detectable viral load in Australian HIV Observational Database patients receiving cART declined over calendar time, albeit at higher levels than observed. However, over this period, HIV diagnoses and estimated HIV incidence increased in Australia

    Hitomi (ASTRO-H) X-ray Astronomy Satellite

    The Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission is the sixth Japanese x-ray astronomy satellite developed by a large international collaboration, including Japan, USA, Canada, and Europe. The mission aimed to provide the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E  >  2  keV, using a microcalorimeter instrument, and to cover a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft x-rays to gamma rays. After a successful launch on February 17, 2016, the spacecraft lost its function on March 26, 2016, but the commissioning phase for about a month provided valuable information on the onboard instruments and the spacecraft system, including astrophysical results obtained from first light observations. The paper describes the Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission, its capabilities, the initial operation, and the instruments/spacecraft performances confirmed during the commissioning operations for about a month
